In a similar trajectory to the great Southern chef Edna Lewis, Gene Hovis was born in North Carolina and learned to cook Southern food; when he moved to New York City to try a career on the stage, he expanded his repertoire to finer haute cuisine. Craig Claiborne described him as “one of the finest hosts of New York.”
